Maldives with Family: Everything You Need to Know

The Maldives has a reputation as a honeymoon destination — and it absolutely is one. But it is also one of the most spectacular family holidays you can take, and Indian families in particular find it a revelation. It is close (just 3–4 hours from most Indian cities), requires no visa, and delivers a level of natural beauty that photographs simply cannot capture.

Is the Maldives Right for Your Family?

The Maldives is ideal for families who want:

  • Relaxation over sightseeing — this is not a destination packed with monuments or museums
  • Water activities — snorkelling, swimming, kayaking, and marine life encounters
  • Luxury and privacy — the resort model means your family has space and service
  • A short, high-impact trip — even 4 nights feels transformative

If your children are under 5, choose a resort with a lagoon (calm, shallow water) rather than a house reef with strong currents.

Choosing the Right Resort

This is the single most important decision for a Maldives family holiday. The islands vary enormously — some are 5-minute speedboat transfers from the airport, others require a 45-minute seaplane.

For families with young children: Look for resorts with a shallow lagoon, a kids' club, and family villas with connecting rooms. Resorts on North Malé Atoll (short speedboat transfer) are convenient if you have toddlers who may struggle with long seaplane journeys.

For families with older children (8+): A seaplane transfer opens up the more remote, spectacular atolls — Baa Atoll (UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, famous for manta rays) and South Malé Atoll are worth the extra travel time.

Budget considerations: The Maldives has a wide range of resorts. Our packages start from ₹95,000 for 4 nights for 2 adults + 2 children — this covers a well-regarded 4-star resort with all meals included (full board is strongly recommended as dining à la carte adds up quickly).

What to Do with Children

Snorkelling is the headline activity, and most resorts have a house reef accessible directly from the beach or jetty. Children as young as 6 can snorkel with a life jacket and see turtles, reef sharks, and thousands of tropical fish.

Glass-bottom boat trips are perfect for younger children who are not yet comfortable in the water — you see the same marine life without getting wet.

Dolphin cruises at sunset are a family favourite. Most resorts offer them daily, and sightings are almost guaranteed.

Water sports — kayaking, paddleboarding, and banana boat rides — keep older children entertained for hours.

Bioluminescence beach walks — on certain islands, the shoreline glows blue at night due to phytoplankton. This is one of the most magical experiences in travel, and children never forget it.

Practical Tips

All-inclusive vs full board: We recommend full board (breakfast, lunch, dinner) as a minimum. The Maldives levies a 16% GST on food and beverages, and à la carte prices are high. All-inclusive packages that include soft drinks and water sports offer the best value.

Packing: Reef-safe sunscreen is mandatory at most resorts (and the right thing to do). Pack rash guards for children — the equatorial sun is intense. Bring your own snorkel set if you have one; rental quality varies.

Currency: The US dollar is accepted everywhere. Carry small denominations for tips.

Health: The Maldives has excellent medical facilities on the main island (Malé) and most large resorts have a doctor on call. No vaccinations are required for Indian nationals.

The Best Time to Visit

November to April is the dry season — calm seas, clear skies, and excellent visibility for snorkelling. This is peak season, so book early.

May to October is the wet season. Prices drop significantly, and the rain is typically short and sharp rather than all-day. Many families find this excellent value, and the marine life (including whale sharks) is actually more abundant.

Our Maldives Family Package

Our 4-night Maldives Family Escape starts from ₹95,000 for 2 adults + 2 children (land only, ex-Bengaluru), including full board accommodation at a carefully selected resort with a kids' club and house reef.
